The Children's Place Association

About Us

The Children's Place Association is a safe haven for children and families whose lives have been devastated by illness and poverty. Since opening in 1991, the organization has helped more than 2,000 of Chicago area children and adults affected by HIV/AIDS or other serious health conditions. Services include residential care with 24-hour nursing, specialized early childhood education, summer day camp, mental health counseling, foster care/adoption, supportive family housing and more.  In 2007, the organization launched Children's Place International to bring vital services to children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in other regions of the world.

Our Mission

The mission of The Children's Place Association is to improve the present and secure the future for children, youth and families confronted by HIV/AIDS or other life-changing health conditions.

Who We Serve

We serve vulnerable children and their families in Chicagoland who are affected by HIV/AIDS or other life-changing health conditions, including among others cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and complications of prematurity or substance exposure.

Children's Place International helps children living in the Caribbean and Southern Africa gain health, skill sets and confidence to escape the cycle of poverty.

Why We Serve

Currently more than 2.5 million children live with HIV/AIDS worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In addition, there are many more children that are affected, meaning one or both of their parents are HIV-positive. Countless other children face life-changing health conditions which make each day a constant struggle. The families we serve are not only faced with debilitating disease, but they also live in extreme poverty.  We exist to help these families break the cycle of illness and poverty, live as survivors and give their children a chance at a brighter future.

History

At a time in history when many infants and young children were neglected, abandoned or left parentless because of their own and/or their parents' HIV infection, a group of individuals came together to open a home for these vulnerable children. In August 1991, The Children's Place Association opened its doors as the Midwest's first residential facility dedicated to the care of HIV/AIDS-affected children.

Today, the Residential Center continues to offer 24-hour nursing care and other specialized treatment for children.

While the face of HIV/AIDS has changed over the past two decades, The Children's Place Association has adapted programs and services to continue to meet the needs of children and their families.
